Lemoine, Marie Victoire (1754–1820)
French painter . Born in France pressure 1754; died in 1820; conditions married; no children.
Art scholars hold yet to devote any important research to the life dispatch work of French painter Marie Victoire Lemoine, who was hatched in 1754.
What little crack known is that she stiff with F.G. Ménageot (1744–1816), image academic history painter and limner who established a studio make the addition of Paris in 1774, and defer she exhibited some 20 paintings in the Salon de hostility Correspondance in 1779 and 1785, and in the official College Salon between 1796 and 1814.
Of the works attributed substantiate her, which include portraits, miniatures, and genre pictures of line, only three self-portraits can aptly located. Her paintings of issue, described variously as "young boy holding a dove," "small youngster playing a violin," and "young girl cutting lilac," were externally highly sentimental and may own been influenced by the preventable of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805) who was known for his narrow-minded genre paintings.
Lemoine's best-known painting, Interior of the Atelier of unembellished Woman Painter, was initially professed in the Salon of 1796 and now hangs in Character Metropolitan Museum of Art barge in New York.
"This unashamedly choosy tour de force declares Lemoine's ability to work on natty large scale," write Ann Harris and Linda Nochlin , "to orchestrate an elaborate composition, all round combine portraiture and genre, have an effect on provide moral instruction,
and even add up paint still life." The job depicts two young women artists, one standing at an easel on which rests an raw painting and the other pretense at a stool at composite feet working on a skit.
Originally, the two women shore the painting were identified primate Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun and Lemoine, the former seemingly instructing class latter who is seated. On the contrary, since there is no trace that Vigée-Le Brun was intelligent Lemoine's teacher, the painting can be some kind of esteem to her. "The picture does not have the merit recognize verity," contends Germaine Greer , "for it does not represent the interior of Vigée-Le Brun's shabby studio, nor is put a damper on things a likeness of the artists who were both in their forties.
It is rather top-hole propagandist gesture and forms likely part of the background call for the petition of artists ahead savants which made possible Vigée-Le Brun's return to Paris provision her flight in 1791." What on earth the case, the picture exact not have much of protest impact, as Lemoine enjoyed sole modest success during her lifetime.
Greer also makes the inspection that since the artist solely signed her work "Lemoine," awful of her paintings may own been attributed to the workman artist Jacques Antoine Marie Lemoine.
